Profile: Driver-of-the-Year 2009
"Magic Don Juan" Cadenas

A Mexico native, Juan’s family moved to Salinas, CA when he was 3 years old. He
grew up there, completed high-school, and began driving a truck shortly thereafter,
at the age of 19. He has driven a truck ever since and, at one point, even hauled
produce under his own operating authority with his companion of 6 years, Beatriz
Ruiz, handling their accounts receivable and dispatching duties. In 2007, while
in Dallas, Juan met a driver who recommended National Carriers as a great driving
opportunity, and, in December of that year, Juan joined the NCI Leasing program
as a member of the 48-state fleet. Wanting to be closer to his family, in March
of 2010, Juan made the decision to transfer to the West coast fleet. He was worried
at first, having heard that there were fewer miles available in that region, but
says that it has worked out extremely well, and he has never had trouble getting
the miles that he needed.
Juan's favorite thing about NCI is that the people treat you like
family and they watch out for one another. He can remember one specific occasion
when his tractor was broken-down that NCI placed him in another vehicle to ensure
that he was able to continue running and generating the miles he needed to provide
for his family.
Juan says that he thinks the hardest part of being in the trucking industry,
right now, is the rising cost of fuel, but that the NCI fuel surcharge offsets the
increased cost. He says his words of advice to other drivers would be: "if you want
to work, you will achieve your goal;" and "don’t give up. The first few weeks will
be difficult, but you’re starting a business. There will be some expenses, but once
you get going, you’ve got it made."
